Candidate for City Council At Large

Responses to Wilmington Police Reform Survey

Will you vote to make all police disciplinary records public, and push for changes in state law necessary to make that possible?

Yes and I believe it is important that we break down the public records from the police department to ensure communities understand the laws and can make suggestions for changes in addition to law makers.

Will you vote for an ordinance prohibiting Wilmington police from engaging in civil asset forfeiture?

Yes, especially when it comes to taking a personal asset like a house.

Will you vote for Wilmington police to collect and publish data, including by race, on all pedestrian and traffic stops they conduct, including the reason for the stop?

Yes, collecting this data is important as well as the person knowing the reason they were stopped.

Will you vote in favor of periodic psychological evaluations of Wilmington police officers? Will you vote for funds to mental health support for officers?

Yes, mental health and psychological evaluations are extremely vital for our officers and for the safety of our residents.

Will you vote for issuing all Wilmington Police officers body cameras?

Yes and in favor of this in our current 107th session of Council as well

Since police officers are public servants, do you believe footage from arrest and police misconduct should be made public record?

Yes

If elected would you create and/or vote yes on an ordinance to end “no knock warrants”?

Yes absolutely!

Will you vote in favor of ending Operation Safe Streets, which utilizes aggressive policing tactics to harass Wilmington families and community members?

Yes, I have seen this live off of Market Street downtown and in neighborhoods, it is disturbing. I would also like to see the data around the demographics and outcomes for Operation Safe Streets.

Will you vote in favor of a community review board that has the power to investigate incidents and complaints, audit policy compliance, has hiring and firing authority, and make records and hearings public to the greatest extent possible?

Yes!

Will you require and fund Wilmington Police to operate a pre-arrest diversion program for people with substance abuse issues (a model similar to New Castle County’s Hero Help)?

Yes, over the years I have been acquiring information regarding New Castle County’s Hero Help program to see how we can implement it here in the City of Wilmington. It is so needed.

Communities of color in Wilmington have borne the brunt of aggressive policing and war on crime policies for decades. Those communities also bear the scars of decades of discrimination in housing, education, and access to economic opportunity. What will you do as a Council member, Mayor, or treasurer to repair that harm?

As a Council Member At-Large, I will commit to working on solutions for the social ills that have affected our communities for decades. I have the honor of being the Chair of Community Development and Urban Planning for Council and these issues are dear to my heart. I would like to continue the work I have started in the 107th session protecting our communities from more scars in housing, education, access to economic opportunities and food options, environmental disadvantages to name a few. We have been placing bandaid fixes for decades and it is time that we truly invest in all of our communities, you should feel welcomed and appreciated no matter what part of the City you are in. I look forward to working alongside our communities of color and assisting in anyway I can. My duty is to serve and I will do that to my best ability.
